This past summer, yours truly, was a guest at long time friend's 40th birthday party. In tribute to our friendship to the length of our friendship which began in the late eighties, I brought as a gift, a case of 40 ounce bottles of malt liquor. I cannot specifically identify why though. Was it the packaging? After all 40 oz. is ~56% of a six pack. Or was it the contents of good fashioned malt liquor? Either way, it seems that the Forty has gotten an undeserved bad rap.
You hear frequently that Jazz, Blues, and Country are the only three musical genres to originate in America, but, did you know that there are three beer types that originated in America? Yes, steam beer, light beer, and malt liquor all originated in America. Now unlike Jazz, Blues, and light beer, malt liquor is frowned upon by people with purported taste and class. Now this particular author thinks that that is a bunch of bullshit.
Now I do not suggest that I know the long history of malt liquor. I do not (click here to read its history). I can only speak to malt liquor in my own historical context. You see, my drinking starting in the early to mid eighties. Back then, before there was hip hop (although there was some rap), malt liquor was advertised by none other than Billy Dee Williams. For the younger readers of this blog, Billy Dee was the consummate black leading man starring in such films as Lady Sings the Blues and Mahogany, both opposite of Diana Ross. The message was clear. So, where does this leave us? Well, I actually don't know. What I do know is that I like Forties and I will continue to consume same said. Unfortunately, they are impractical to drive with. Of course, out of the blocks, it is against the law. But outside of that, you need a good 30 minutes to properly consume a Forty, thus, your drive time would need to exceed 30 minutes (that just doesn't happen alot). Additionally, they do no fit in the standard cup holder, thus, it is difficult if not impossible eat, drink, and drive or even drink, drive, and smoke weed all at the same time. So, I guess this author will simply have to enjoy his malt liquor in the confines of the special occasion event.
